How To Install Pocket Door Pull Handle

2025-11-12

The following is a step-by-step guide on how to install a Pocket Door Pull Handle on a sliding door.

If you have your handle kit ready and the door is correctly installed and hung, the process will go more smoothly.

Items needed

Your sliding door handle kit (flush/inset handle)

Tape measure, pencil/marker

Drill (and a drill bit suitable for wood)

Chisel and hammer (for mortise cutting, if flush)

Screwdriver for installing screws

May need masking tape to protect the surface

Safety equipment (goggles, dust mask)

Installation steps

1. Mark the handle position

Close the door to its normal closed position.

Determine the height of the handle: Many installations use a height of about 36 to 38 inches from the ground, but you can adjust it according to your comfort.

Mark the center position of the handle on the edge of the door (for sliding doors) or the face of the door (depending on the style). Also, mark the positions of any screw holes or installation holes according to the template provided in the tool kit. www.wekishome.com

2. Prepare the edge/surface of the door for the handle

Many Inset Handles require cutting into the edge or surface of the door (mortise) so that the handle is flush with the door surface. For example, you can start by drilling a hole and then use a chisel to remove some material until the handle can lie flat.

Some installation guides recommend reinforcing the back of the veneer with a wooden block before chiseling to prevent damage.

Use a Forstner bit or hole saw bit to drill out most of the cavity, and then finish with a chisel.

3. Test fit to ensure it's right.

Before permanently installing the handle, insert it into the groove you've cut to ensure it's flush and installed correctly. If necessary, make adjustments with a chisel.

Make sure the door can still fully close into the frame and that the handle doesn't hit the frame or wall.

4. Install the handle

Align the handle with the drilled/cut cavity and the screw holes.

Tighten the handle securely in place with the screws provided in the kit. Ensure the handle is flush and doesn't wobble.

For flat handles, you may also need to insert a sealing strip or decorative trim. For example: "Divide the handle sealing strip into two parts... Insert into the inner groove of the handle... Trim off the excess."

5. Final check and test

Slide the door closed and open a few times. Ensure the handle is comfortable to grip and doesn't interfere with the sliding or hit the door stop.

If the handle comes with a latch or lock plate, make sure they are aligned correctly and everything operates smoothly.

Tips and Precautions

If your door is hollow or a thin panel door, be sure to choose the right hardware (avoid using large holes that could weaken the door).

For sliding doors, space is tight - if the handle protrudes too much, it may prevent the door from fully sliding into the track.

Apply masking tape around the thin wood at the cutting position to reduce splintering or chipping when drilling or chiseling.

Double-check the dimensions from the edge of the door to ensure it doesn't interfere with structural components or the frame.

If the hardware includes templates, use them strictly - the position and depth of the holes are crucial for a flush installation.
