How to Unlock a Tubular Lock

2026-04-10

A Tubular Lock, also called a circle lock, uses a round keyway and radial pins for security, common in vending machines, toolboxes, and bike locks. Unlocking it requires proper tools, patience, and careful technique.

First, prepare the right tools: a matching tubular lock pick (7pin or 8pin to fit your lock), lubricant (graphite or silicone), and safety gear. Count the locks pin slots first; mismatched picks will fail. Clean dirt or rust from the keyway and apply a small amount of lubricant to reduce friction.

Calibrate the pick before use. Loosen the side adjustment bolt, then press the picks needles gently against a flat surface to reset them to equal length. Align the needles with the locks pin positions and retighten the bolt to secure the setting.

Insert the calibrated pick straight into the keyway, applying steady, even inward pressure. Do not twist forcefully yet. Let each needle seat against its corresponding pin stack. Maintain light inward force while slowly turning the pick left and right. Listen and feel for faint clickssigns that pins reach the shear line. Keep gentle torque until the plug rotates and the lock opens.

If it fails, remove the pick, reset the needles, adjust tension slightly, and try again. Beginners often need several tries. For a quick emergency method on basic locks, a trimmed ballpoint pen tube may work, but it is less reliable and can damage the lock. Drilling is a last resort: use a small bit at the center, drill shallowly to disable the pin chamber, then turn the lock. This destroys the lock and requires replacement.

Always practice on your own locks first. For highsecurity or valuable items, call a professional locksmith. Legal and careful handling protects both your property and your rights.
