Wide double-leaf Hinges are a special type of double-leaf hinge in which the width of the hinge plate (i.e., the flat rectangular metal plate) exceeds its height. This wider design increases the contact area between the hinge and the door leaf and door frame, making it sturdier and capable of supporting heavier loads than standard hinges.
Its main features are as follows:
Design and Function: The distinguishing feature of wide double-leaf hinges is their “stretched” appearance; they are wider when viewed from the side, unlike standard double-leaf hinges (which are typically taller and narrower). This wider geometry serves as a structural reinforcement, reducing the load on the screws and the door itself. As a result, they are ideal for preventing doors from sagging over time, often eliminating the need for thicker hinges.
Common Applications: These hinges are typically used in situations requiring additional load-bearing capacity. They are well-suited for heavy indoor and outdoor doors, including those where the door leaf must clear deep door frames or casings entirely (which is why they are sometimes referred to as “wide-opening hinges”). Additionally, they are commonly used for large, thick cabinet or furniture doors, as well as heavy-duty access doors or machine enclosures in industrial settings.
Comparison of Wide-Body Double-Sided Hinges and Standard Double-Sided Hinges
Standard double-sided hinges are taller than they are wide, featuring a compact design that relies on the thickness and strength of the material to support light- to medium-duty doors and standard cabinets. Wide double-action hinges are wider than they are tall, offering a larger mounting contact area. Their broad geometry distributes weight and stress, making them the preferred choice for heavy-duty doors, doors that need to clear wide door frames, and large furniture.
There is also a similar type of hinge known as a panel hinge. These are similarly used to allow doors to swing past protruding door frames, but they typically feature a more decorative, openwork design. For this reason, panel hinges generally have a lower load-bearing capacity than wide-body double-action hinges; therefore, wide-body double-action hinges are the better choice for very heavy doors.
