1. Mark the hinge locations: Measure and trace. Install the top hinge 5 to 7 inches below the top of the door frame, and the bottom hinge 9 to 11 inches above the floor. If using a third, middle hinge, install it exactly halfway between the other two hinges. Place the hinge plate flush against the edge of the door and trace closely along its edge with a sharp pencil or utility knife.

2. Set the Depth and Score the Line: Prepare to cut the groove. Accurately measure the thickness of one hinge plate. Adjust the ruler (or mark the chisel) to this exact depth. Using a wooden mallet and a sharp chisel—held vertically with the cutting edge facing inward—chisel along the marked outline to score the edge.

3. Cut the mortise: Carve out the groove. Tilt the chisel at a 45-degree angle and make a series of shallow cross-cuts (thinning cuts) within the marked area. Then, lay the chisel flat with the cutting edge facing down and carefully remove the wood within the outline until the groove is even and smooth.

4. Test-fit and adjust: Ensure it is flush and aligned. Insert the hinge leaf into the mortise. It should be completely flush with the edges of the surrounding wood. If it protrudes, chisel away a little more wood. If it is too deep, place a thin piece of cardboard (shim) underneath to make it flush.

5. Drill pilot holes and screw holes: Install the hinges. Mark the center points of the screw holes. Drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting (using a self-centering drill bit ensures the holes are perfectly centered). Screw the screws in straight to secure the door panel to the door, then repeat these steps for the mortises in the door frame before installing the door.

Pro Tip: When drilling holes, be sure to cut along the grain of the wood to prevent splintering. Never force a screw into hard wood without pre-drilling—this can cause the screw head to strip or the screw to snap off inside the door frame.
