The Dimensions That Control Fit

Several measurements influence installation at the same time:

• Lever length affects grip space and visual proportion.

• Projection measures how far the handle extends from the door.

• Rose or plate size determines how much of the fixing area is covered.

• Spindle size must fit the follower inside the lock or latch.

• Fixing centres must match the mounting holes.

• Door thickness affects spindle, screw, and bolt length.

These measurements form the foundation of a practical door handle sizing guide. They should be recorded in millimetres and supported by drawings whenever possible.

Lever Length and Projection

Longer levers provide more gripping room and may be easier to operate on frequently used doors. However, an oversized lever can look unbalanced on a narrow panel or come too close to a frame, wall, or adjacent door.

Projection is equally important. Too little clearance may cause fingers to touch the door surface, while excessive projection increases the chance of contact with passing objects. Buyers should check the available operating space instead of selecting a size based only on catalogue images.

Rose and Backplate Coverage

Round and square roses conceal the fixing structure around the spindle. If the rose is smaller than the existing preparation, drill marks or previous cut-outs may remain visible. Oversized roses can interfere with decorative grooves, narrow stiles, or nearby glazing.

Backplates require additional checks because their length, width, fixing positions, and keyhole layout must align with the lock case. Where replacement hardware is involved, existing hole positions should be measured directly.

Why Door Thickness Changes the Hardware Set

Door thickness does not normally change the visible lever, but it changes the connecting parts behind it. A spindle that is too short cannot engage both handles securely. One that is too long may prevent the roses from sitting tightly against the door.

The same principle applies to through-bolts and fixing screws. Timber, metal, aluminium, and Glass Doors may also require different mounting structures. Providing the door material together with its thickness allows the factory to prepare a more accurate hardware set.

Matching the Handle to the Lock

The handle and lock must share compatible spindle and fixing dimensions. For handles on plate, the centre-to-centre distance between the spindle and Cylinder or keyhole is particularly important. Small discrepancies can make installation impossible without modifying the door.
